Firefly & Stumptown Disc Golf team up to help build Astoria Disc Golf Course
Stumptown Disc Golf sent Steve Carson and Ryan Gwillim to Astoria July 24-25 to help build the North Coasts first disc golf course. The North Coast Disc Golf course is the outcome of the Ford Institute's Leadership program and the participants that chose to build a disc golf course. The team selected the Clatsop County Fairgrounds and obtained permission to build the course at that location, just a few minutes from downtown Astoria.
This spring the group contact Stumptown Disc Golf president, Steve Carson, asking for help designing and building a course. Steve made several trips to the coast to checkout the site and talk with Micah Russell, the liaison for the team. In the late fall a design team consisting of Courey Coats, Jeff Hagerty, Chris Brow, Ryan Gwillim and Steve Carson went down and designed the course with two tee pad locations and two basket locations for each hole of a 9 hole course.
The course is almost ready to play. 7 of the 9 holes can be played currently with the remaining two holes requiring some additional grooming of the fairways as they head through the dense forest. A grand opening celebration is slated for the second weekend of October.
